UN survey of 10,000 men in Asia and the Pacific reveals why some men use violence against women and girls
A UN study of 10,000 men in Asia and the Pacific, released today, found that overall nearly half of those men interviewed reported using physical and/or sexual violence against a female partner, ranging from 26 percent to 80 percent across the sites studied. Nearly a quarter of men interviewed reported perpetrating rape against a woman or girl, ranging from 10 percent to 62 percent across the sites.

The urbanization process in the Asia-Pacific region is proceeding at unprecedented speed and scale. Rapid urbanization linked to economic growth brings new opportunities and challenges for sustainable and inclusive development. The pace of urban growth has caught many governments and communities in Asia and the Pacific unprepared. The demand for land, shelter, transport, energy supplies and social and environmental services has outstripped supply. The importance of cities to inclusive development and poverty reduction provides a compelling case for a greater and more strategic UNDP involvement in urban issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Working together to build an inclusive, sustainable and resilient Asia-Pacific”: UN Development Chief for Asia
New York - Mr. Haoliang Xu assumes his role as the new Director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today. A Chinese national, Mr. Xu has held various leadership positions in UNDP, most recently as Deputy Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

New report from UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre investigates the sustainable energy opportunities and challenges in the region in relation to poverty reduction and development. It is produced in line with the United Nations Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All Initiative (SE4ALL), which seeks to reach three goals by 2030: Universal access to modern energy; double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

The impact of corruption and the challenge of fighting corruption are well known to citizens and observers of the Pacific. In recognizing the importance of fighting corruption, the United Nations has commenced a 4 year USD4.3 million Pacific Regional Anti-Corruption Project. The Project, funded by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), is being jointly implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Today eight awardees have been announced by N-Peace Network partners, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Search for Common Ground. The winners include six women who have made dramatic changes towards peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste and the Philippines. In addition, this year’s awards honour a youth champion of peace from the Philippines and one male recipient who works to advance peace and equality in post-conflict regions in Indonesia.

Translating National Integration of Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change at the Community Level
The integration of climate change and disaster risk management functions is taking place at the national and community level in various ways. Today, at the Pacific Platform for Disaster Risk Management and the Pacific Climate Change Roundtable, representatives from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Tonga shared concrete examples of how these are impacting at the national level.

For the past three weeks, over 35 religious and civil society leaders from Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea (including Bougainville), West Papua, New Caledonia, Tahiti, Nauru, Kiribati, Samoa and American Samoa, have undergone an intensive training course in peacebuilding.

The second in a series of workshops to build the skills of youth in organic agriculture concluded in Port Vila last week. Organic agriculture is a farming system that relies on working closely with the ecosystem without reliance on chemicals to increase yields or manage weeds and pests. Organic agriculture is also one of the areas attracting young farmers worldwide. Against the backdrop of an aging farming population in the Pacific, organic agriculture has been identified as a means to get more young Pacific Islanders involved in farming.
