The urbanization process in the Asia-Pacific region is proceeding at unprecedented speed and scale. Rapid urbanization linked to economic growth brings new opportunities and challenges for sustainable and inclusive development. The pace of urban growth has caught many governments and communities in Asia and the Pacific unprepared. The demand for land, shelter, transport, energy supplies and social and environmental services has outstripped supply. The importance of cities to inclusive development and poverty reduction provides a compelling case for a greater and more strategic UNDP involvement in urban issues in the Asia-Pacific region.

New report from UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre investigates the sustainable energy opportunities and challenges in the region in relation to poverty reduction and development. It is produced in line with the United Nations Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All Initiative (SE4ALL), which seeks to reach three goals by 2030: Universal access to modern energy; double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

The United Nations launched the Zero Hunger Challenge in Asia and the Pacific here today in the presence of top national leaders, calling on governments, farmers, scientists, business, civil society and consumers to join hands to end hunger in the region where the majority of the world’s undernourished people live.

‘Yet, still we dance’ was a unique art exhibit with works created by sex workers from eight ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste. More than 50 sex worker artists were involved in creating this exhibit using a range of mediums including sculpture, painting, fabric, and photography. It ran for 10 days at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.

[February 15 - Nadi, Fiji] While discussions were being held in the Pacific this week on the issue of trade and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark has called for swift, firm measures to halt a global surge in diseases such as cancer and diabetes, saying they belong “permanently on the global development agenda.”

Access to clean and affordable modern energy is critical for social and economic development. Worldwide, about 1.5 billion have no access to electricity, and 1 billion more have access only to unreliable electricity networks. In the Himalayan country, Nepal, the towering mountains are a formidable obstacle to the people who need modern energy. Only 20 percent of the mountain villages have access to electricity.

In the Asia Pacific Region, the number of people receiving anti-retroviral treatment (ART) has increased steadily to an estimated 922,000 people by end 2010, representing an estimated 39% of all people eligible for ART according to 2010 WHO Guidelines. This progress has largely been made possible by the dramatic drop in antiretroviral (ARV) prices over the last ten years due to generic competition.
